Overview

The Homoki Lodge in Hungary offers fantastic riding opportunities in a setting celebrating the rich uniqueness of the area’s culture, where equestrian traditions run deep.

With options to stay in luxury yurts and ride Hungarian warmbloods through the southern puszta, the experiences echo traditional practices in totally modern and upgraded ways. The rides depart from the lodge each day, radiating in different directions to visit local points of interest, giving you some insight into the history and culture of the region.

The horses are fit and responsive, and the flat, sandy plains lend themselves to invigorating gallops. At the same time the staff is carefully attentive to your needs and can adjust the rides and pace as needed. The amenities of the lodge cater to your desires, with a pool and massage services available, with fabulous gourmet meals and suggestions for pairing with lovely local wines.

Breakfast and dinner is included, lunch is an added expense to be purchased from the restaurant or bistro. Great care and attention is paid to serving gastronomic delights with an emphasis on traditional ingredients.
All drinks are an extra expense, and a variety of local wines and liquors are available.

  • Overview:
    The horses are around 16 hh and are ridden unshod. They are most suited to confident riders who have experience riding at speed over a variety of terrain. The breed was established at the Mezohegyes State Stud, selectively breeding Gidran, Kisberi, Achal Tiki, Nonius, North Star Furioso and Arabian horses to produce the Hungarian Sport Horse. Modern traditional Hungarian saddles are used.

The lodge can offer tours by fat-tire bike, jeep or horse and carriage and can also arrange archery lessons, boat tours, hiking routes, or sky diving. Yoga, massages and spa services also available.

The local area around Ruzsa, Szeged and Morahalom offers many cultural sights and activities, and the lodge is happy to help arrange visits and tours.

Transfer can be arranged from within Hungary (at extra cost), typically from Budapest International airport or Szeged train station.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

If transfer is part of the package, you’ll be met by the driver at the Budapest Airport or at arranged meeting point. This one and a half to two hour trip leads through the Hungarian Southern Great Plain. Near the end of the journey transfer will leave tarmac roads and continue on sandy tracks to the secluded lodge.
You’ll be shown to your accommodation then can meet the freely kept horses on the pastures and the animal husbandry with Mangalicza pigs, Racka sheep and the guard geese. In the evening a typical Hungarian menu is served at Homoki Asztal Restaurant and Lounge Bar (drinks not included).

Day 2

Enjoy a delicious breakfast before your first ride of the day, leaving at 9am. Get  acquainted with the openness of the country, the seemingly never ending sandy tracks, and meadows to discover. Pass through pine and acacia forests where you might spot some of the local wildlife including hare, foxes, golden jackals or even wild boar. Enjoy infinite views across the rolling plains.

Perhaps today you’ll ride to the nearby Nature Reserve, where you might spot falcons, buzzards, bee-eaters, beetles, lizards orwild orchids along the Ásotthalmi “Csoda Rét” or “Wunderwiese,” which was founded by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph the First and his Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary Elisabeth, better known as “Sissy” in the early 19th century. The winding little paths that lead through this landscape are one of the most popular tours we offer. Depending on the time of year, the journey is fast or moderate to avoid slipping.

Lunch is not included in the package price, but a  2-3 course lunch menu can be prepared at the restaurant Homoki Asztal for 18 / 24 Eur (make a reservation in advance) between 12pm and 2:30pm,  or Homoki Bistro offers snacks between 3 pm and 6 pm.

Afternoon provides time to relax at the pool or at the open fireplace in the lounge area, or other experiences can be booked at the Lodge reception. Dinner is taken at Homoki Asztal or at the terrace with a view at the paddocks (Drinks are not included).

Day 3

Tour the lovely blooming meadows full of seasonal flowers such as uncountable Red Poppies, Bugac Orchid, small Pasque Flower, Sea Aster, Autumn Lady’s-tresses, Giant Hungarian Daisy, Tisza-parti Margitvirág, Hungarian Milkvetch, Buckbean/Bogbean, Marsh Gladiolus etc. Perhaps you’ll see the hares crossing the plains between the hoofs of the horses. A canter and panorama paradise!

Every third and fourth Sunday each month are market days in the nearby villages. On these days you can leave after breakfast to ride to the market place. At arrival your horse shall be taken care by the staff while you walk into the markets and dive into the lively bustle of the market traders. Livestock, antiques, fresh goods, clothes and everything one can imagine is haggled for. Return back to enjoy some stunning views over meadows and the never ending sandy tracks.

Day 4

Enjoy a ride through forests, swamps and meadows. See fallow deer and wild boar in a breeding reserve. This tour is designed to give visitors a better idea of ​​how flora and fauna change with the seasons. A good chance of seeing bee-eaters nest is between April and September. Finally, the horses can show what they’re made of on a long gallop home towards the lodge.

Day 5

Enjoy a final meal and check out by 12pm. If booked in advance, return transfer to the airport or down town Budapest.
